Chickasaw citizen and emergency medical resident Dr. Brandon Postoak says he struggled with his identity and purpose in life until he connected more closely to his Chickasaw culture. Immersing himself in his Chickasaw culture inspired him to continue his education, which led to a love of science, which led to his pursuit of a medical degree. He is currently an emergency medical resident and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, hoping he can inspire others. "My culture was the biggest influence on becoming who I was," he says. He credits the Chickasaw Nation Higher Education Department with helping him during his undergraduate, master’s and doctorate degrees. And his Chickasaw ancestors, who practiced traditional medicine, were additional inspiration. "We have medicine men and medicine women in our family," he says. "I'm sure there's something deep down inside me that kind of helped to gear me toward this direction."
