Medicine Bags

Chickasaw Culture Keepers

Chickasaw elder Pat Greenwood Cox makes medicine bags to preserve the culture and traditions of her ancestors. "I try to keep my traditional ways that my mother and my father taught me way back when I was younger," she says. "Everything is changing so fast in our world. I believe that some of us older ones should teach the children what the meaning is behind all this stuff." Handcrafted with leather and thread, Pat explains her step-by-step process to make medicine bags and why it is important to her to keep this tradition alive. "I'm just very proud that I can make something that they had way back in our history," she says. "When something turns out real pretty and I'm satisfied with it, I am proud of it. And I think whatever you make, whatever you do, always be proud."
