Turkey Calls

Chickasaw Culture Keepers

Chickasaw elder Wayne Edgar is a master craftsman who constructs turkey calls using traditional techniques and materials, chiefly wing bones from the wild turkey itself. Here he lovingly demonstrates his craft, explaining how both traditional and modern tools can be employed to make a call that is both effective and weatherproof. He also shows how to use the calls and how to adjust them for different pitch registers. This is an art that he was taught by his grandmothers and is dedicated to passing on to future generations. "As an elder, I am very happy to teach these things," Edgar says. "And when I speak, my grandmothers live."
