Our Capitol in Tishomingo

Dr. Amanda Cobb-Greetham

On November 17, 1898, the new Chickasaw National Capitol was dedicated in Tishomingo, Indian Territory (the future Oklahoma). The legislature had authorized its construction in 1891. It began in 1896, built of native granite quarried north of the site. Hear Director of Native American Studies at the University of Oklahoma, Amanda Cobb-Greetham, describe the statement this made as the threat of dissolution of tribes was on the horizon.
