Costumes for Lowak Dance Troupe, Scene 1

Margaret Roach Wheeler

Margaret Wheeler shows us the costumes she designed for six Chickasaw Dance Troupe couples who dance in two numbers. In the first, the look represents the time of European contact (1541) and the arrival of trade cloth. Men were wearing a cloth poet-style shirt with armbands, gorgets and woven belts – all popular trade items – but with buckskin leggings. The women’s costumes are one-shouldered as their buckskin dresses were, but made of trade cloth and fringed, reflecting the European influence in the 17th century.
