As the newly formed United States expanded west, the Chickasaw people were forced to leave the new state of Mississippi. Soon after, their ancestral Homeland became a Civil War battlefield and it was here that the southern town of Tupelo took root, where Chickasaw villages had adjacent waterways and rich farmland. Today, the stories of a great Chickasaw civilization continue to be unearthed, painting a picture of Chickasaw history in the area, echoing hunters and warriors, homes and farms.
