As the newly formed United States expanded west, the Chickasaw people were forced to leave the new state of Mississippi. Soon after, their ancestral Homeland became a Civil War battlefield and it was here that the southern town of Tupelo took root, where Chickasaw villages had adjacent waterways and rich farmland. Today, the stories of a great Chickasaw civilization continue to be unearthed, painting a picture of Chickasaw history in the area, echoing hunters and warriors, homes and farms. Chickasaw history is intertwined with the story of Tupelo, Mississippi, and it remains deeply connected to the identity and heritage of the Chickasaw people.
