During removal west to Indian Territory, the Chickasaws chose from two overland routes and a water route along the Arkansas. Their destinations were Fort Coffee and Fort Towson. Scholars have recently uncovered great detail on the journey the Chickasaws called "The Great Walk," sparking new interest in retracing the removal routes.
