Arkansas and Illinois: Scenic Tour

Experience Chickasaw History and Culture

Arkansas tribes lived on the land across the Mississippi River from the Chickasaws, who foiled river traffic from the Chickasaw Bluffs at present-day Memphis. Arkansas mound builders have left several sites behind; the largest mound city was Cahokia, just up the river east of present-day St. Louis. Starting in 1837, Arkansas served Chickasaws along their removal trail - the "Great Walk" to indian Territory in Oklahoma.
