In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many Native American children experienced a harsh reality. They were sent away from their families, indoctrinated into a culture that wasn't their own and forced to shed their identities. This was the boarding school era with the infamous slogan, "Kill the Indian. Save the man." At that time, there was no public outcry; the voices of Native Americans weren't heard.
