European Traders Expose Tribes to Disease

The tribes British traders encountered en route to the Chickasaws exposed them to many diseases that proved fatal. Then in 1699 the French arrived with yellow fever, flu, measles – many of which all but eliminated whole tribes. Because of our inland position, the Chickasaws were spared much of this tragic byproduct of the European presence.
