Tupelo Excitement About Chickasaw Heritage

Richard Green

In the Tupelo area, great interest had been expressed in the Chickasaws since the ‘70s. But only now, with the opening of the Chickasaw Cultural Center in Sulphur complete, is there an acceleration of development in Mississippi. Richard Green describes the tribe’s purchase and preservation of 35 acres at the village site of Chishitawah, with dramatic ridgetops rising over the river valley. An interpretive center may also be ahead.
