Brad Lieb, Chickasaw Nation anthropologist, notes that the whitetail deer, so plentiful on the Blackland Prairie, was an essential part of Chickasaw culture, and provided food, deerskins for clothing and warmth and bone for weapons and tool-making. The deerskin trade with Europeans would change their way of life because it afforded the tribe access to the guns they needed to survive.
