This episode depicts the Chickasaws' first contact with European explorers, in the person of conquistador Hernando de Soto. The Spanish adventurer forged an alliance with the Chickasaws but soon began to take advantage of their hospitality and to assert himself as their leader. The ensuing fight between the Chickasaws and De Soto's forces led the conquistador to abandon his expedition and established a precedent of resistance to European domination.
