March 15, 2018 - Te Ata Exhibit

Chickasaw Nation News

The Chickasaw Cultural Center's latest exhibit celebrates the life and works of iconic Chickasaw storyteller Te Ata Thompson Fisher. Born in Indian Territory in 1895, Te Ata attended college and then began touring with her stories treasured by the Chickasaw Nation. As she built up her reputation, other Native and indigenous peoples began to share their own stories with her, trusting her to tell them authentically and bring them to the attention of the world. Te Ata toured internationally and was invited by her friend Eleanor Roosevelt to dine and perform at the White House. The exhibit showcases her local roots, her strong character and her stellar career as an entertainer and steward of Native lore—one example includes traditional dolls gifted to her when she visited Peru. It also features props from the feature film Te Ata, produced by the Chickasaw Nation. Chickasaw Cultural Center Retail Manager Vicki Penner says that she hopes the exhibit will demonstrate how special Te Ata was and inspire young girls with the scope of her achievements. It will run through early September. Brad Clonch and Quin Tran also remind viewers that the documentary Bearer of the Morning: The Life of Te Ata Thompson Fisher has been released.
