March 1, 2020 – Stomp Dancer Cans

Chickasaw Nation News

Stomp dancing is a treasured tradition in Chickasaw culture, which visitors at the Chickasaw Cultural Center can experience first-hand. "I like it because we get to share with others. People actually join in and get to dance with us," explains Julie Underwood, a stomp dancer and cultural demonstrator. Wearing can shakers, the ladies of the stomp dance play an important role, setting the rhythm and keeping the beat. Making the shakers takes time, according to cultural activities manager Jesse Lindsey, who carefully assembles the cans, preferring to use river rocks collected from Pennington Creek. "It's a little work putting these things together," Jesse says. "Our dances are something special to us."
