June 15, 2018 – Te Ata Behind the Scenes, Part 6

Chickasaw Nation News

In the sixth and final segment behind the scenes of the feature film Te Ata, we get a glimpse at the creation and performance of the powerful music used in the movie. Composer Bryan Miller applauds the talent of the Oklahoma musicians who perform the score, a group that includes a small jazz ensemble, a Native choir and a string orchestra. The jazz used in the film creates the right feel for the historical period but is also used to highlight emotions like Te Ata falling in love with her future husband. Much of the music was recorded at Castle Row Studios in Del City. Chickasaw musician Jeff Carpenter engineered a recording with members of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and also was part of the team that wrote the movie's theme song, "Toward the Rising Sun." Carpenter explains that the song refers to the creation story about Chickasaws following the sun east into their homelands in Mississippi and Alabama, just as later Te Ata traveled east to share her story with the world.
