July 15, 2018 – Lana Duke, Student Athlete and Ambassador

Chickasaw Nation News

A senior at Oklahoma State University, Chickasaw citizen Lana Duke has already started to see her community outreach efforts bear fruit. When she was a freshman in 2015, Duke founded the N7 Field Day at OSU, part of a movement sponsored by Nike to bring sports to youth in Native American communities. The 3rd through 8th graders who attend learn about health and wellness while meeting student athletes and being inspired by their examples. "It makes my heart so happy that I get to reach out to youth and help them in any way," she says, "because I know I've had so much help along the way and so many inspirational people that have helped me." This year's event was one of her last volunteer projects at the school. Lana Duke played on the Cowgirls soccer team, winning the Big 12 Championship in 2017. She was also named one of OSU's Seniors of Significance, one of only 48 students to be awarded the honor this year. Duke says that her experience with the N7 movement helped to solidify her decision to go to medical school next, believing that as a physician she can continue to make a positive impact. She credits her strong Chickasaw family for providing her with good values and a passion for health. Duke says that she plans to continue working with Native youth and providing service to Native American communities.
