July 15, 2016 - An Opponent Like No Other

Chickasaw Nation News

Gary Guffey, Jr., a second-generation boxer, learned most of his skills from watching his father. The practice of martial arts takes more than just strong muscles and quick feet, but patience as well. This 26-year-old Chickasaw's strength and agility helped him earn a spot on American Ninja Warrior, a sports competition that airs on NBC. Though he only had a two-and-a-half-week notice that he qualified for the competition held in Oklahoma City, he made sure to stay in tip-top shape for the big day. With the course as his opponent, he put his mental and physical fitness to the test. Although he didn’t make it to the finals, he says that boxing helped him prepare for one of the best experiences of his life and he hopes to get the opportunity to compete again.
