Meet the Chickasaw Dance Troupe, a group of talented individuals who keep traditions alive at the Chickasaw Cultural Center through songs, tribal dances and the ancient art of shellshaking. Many of the stomp dances and music pay homage to nature, family and fellowship, and Chickasaw dancers move in unison in a counterclockwise fashion. The women in the group keep the rhythm with cans strapped to their legs (turtle shells were used in ancient times), while the men perform the chants. The Chickasaw Dance Troupe is special work for these Chickasaws who work every day to connect people to their culture.
