When you walk through the front entrance at the Artesian Hotel in Sulphur, be sure to note the beautiful piece of etched glass depicting the original Artesian in the early 20th century. What appears to be a framed photograph is actually a single piece of glass. Oklahoma artist Tim Brown created the piece using an incredibly fine sand in a technique that takes great time and patience. Brown, who has been perfecting his craft for over 30 years, also created the stained glass centerpiece in the Oklahoma State Capitol dome. He says glass is the only medium in which he would ever consider working. It’s magical, he describes, a unique substance that lies somewhere between a liquid and solid state.
