Chickasaw citizen Dixie Brewer is an artisan who practices the craft of moccasin making. Her specialty is the pucker toe, a traditional moccasin worn by Chickasaws and other Southeastern tribes. Dixie starts with a paper pattern of the wearer’s foot and then creates the deerskin moccasin off that, with every stitch done by hand. Every pair is custom made and is created to fit perfectly from heel to toe. Dixie first learned to make moccasins from a Chickasaw elder and now, years later, she has mastered the craft. She also is accomplished at beadwork and says she enjoys sharing her skills and Chickasaw culture with others.
