From time immemorial, Chikashshanompa' has brought generations of Chickasaws together. Today, the Chickasaw Nation is ensuring this essential part of Chickasaw culture continues to thrive.
As part of the Decade of Chickasaw Language programming, Chipota Chikashshanompoli (Children Speaking Chickasaw Language) brings children aged 4-14 together to learn Chickasaw. Through singing, dancing, games, technology and more, young Chickasaws are building the foundation for a lifelong connection to Chikashshanompa'. "They're here, they're active, they're engaged, they want to learn," says Chickasaw parent Ashley Wallace. "It's nice to see that, so we know our language is retained for the future."
As the Chickasaw Nation looks toward the future of Chikashshanompa', the language department and Chickasaw families are hopeful. "I would love to see a Chickasaw reunion where you just see a group of kids playing, and you hear them using the language," says Chickasaw Youth Language Education Specialist Sierra Brown. "I believe the language keeps our culture alive, and I'll do what I can to help that mission."
