Chickasaw Nation News

Brad Clonch and Quin Tran begin this episode of CNTV News in the growing art community of Sulphur, Oklahoma, where the ARTesian Gallery & Studios is located. Opened in November 2013, the gallery showcases Chickasaw and Southeastern artwork and provides a space for artists to demonstrate their crafts all year round; there are also classroom spaces, a retail store and many rotating exhibits. Art classes also take place at many Chickasaw Nation Senior Centers, where Chickasaw elders enjoy taking part in hands-on activities like basket weaving. Participants say the classes are therapeutic and provide for relaxing afternoons. Brad and Quin also remind us that January is National Eye Care Month – Oklahoma Optical makes eye exams easy by taking patients’ prescriptions and preparing glasses for them. Services are open to both Chickasaw citizens and to the public and are available through the Ada, Ardmore, Tishomingo and Purcell Health Clinics. Finally, this month marks the 200th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans – though much of the fighting of the War of 1812 was far from Chickasaw lands, there was a threat of the British invading the Gulf Coast. Chickasaw warriors, including Tishominko and George Colbert, were part of the 39th U.S. Infantry. The Battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815, was the last major fight in the War of 1812 and resulted in the defeat of the British army.
