Chickasaw Nation News

In this episode of CNTV News, Brad Clonch and Quin Tran take us to Ardmore for the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly renovated Chickasaw Nation Ardmore Community Center. The community center, which received new finishes and updated architecture, is available for use by Chickasaw families for events like weddings and parties. Next, we talk to new mother Dr. Mahate Parker, who is an OB-GYN with the Nation. She and her mother, Chickasaw Nation Secretary of Health Dr. Judy Goforth Parker, explain the importance and nutritional benefits of breastfeeding. In honor of August being National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, citizens are reminded that the Chickasaw Nation Medical Center supports and promotes breastfeeding. Summer is a busy time for youth camps in the Chickasaw Nation – some participants took part in a three-week program promoting the entrepreneurial spirit and marketing education, while another camp, CNASA, encourages future science and math careers for those interested in both space and aviation. Finally, we end with the Summer Arts Academy, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary. This is a special two-week camp for Chickasaw youth aged eight to eighteen who are interested in honing their artistic skills. The 2014 Academy saw record participation, with more than 180 students enrolled in 22 different classes such as acting, 3D art, fashion design and dance. The Summer Arts Academy provides students an opportunity to create and collaborate with their like-minded peers.
