Chickasaw Nation News

In this episode of CNTV News, Brad and Quin connect with a young Chickasaw whose dedication to her sport took her all the way to the World Series of Stickball! This fast-paced, full-contact game has been a part of Chickasaw culture since ancient times, but Gabrielle Nucosee has been playing since she was 6 years old. At the World Series games in Philadelphia, Mississippi, Gabrielle scored the only goal for her team. Because of this exceptional moment, she was elected to play on the All-Stars team for the first time. "It makes me happy to show others that I'm part of this tradition,” the 19-year-old college honors student says. "I love being Chickasaw."

The Chickasaw Nation hosts competitive stickball teams for youth, men and women. This year, both the junior and senior youth stickball teams were undefeated at the Choctaw Nation Youth Stickball Tournament. Since 2018, the Chickasaw Cultural Camp has invited children to participate in a variety of cultural activities, including making fry bread, playing traditional games and much more. Hosted during fall break, the camp aims to encourage participants to explore their Chickasaw heritage and connect with their tradition.

The Chickasaw Nation's farmers market brings fresh produce and healthy eating options to over 5,000 participants throughout the Nation. While the farmers market is on hiatus during the winter months, Chickasaw seniors can still access fresh produce through the Winter Fruit and Vegetable program November through March. Participants for this program must be Chickasaw citizens age 55 or older, but there are no income requirements. To learn more, visit Chickasaw.net.

In honor of Veterans Day, Brad and Quin explore the Chickasaw Nation's Veterans Lodge and chat with (Ret.) Major Mike Mitchell. The Veterans Lodge is a place for active-duty and retired service men and women to gather and connect with each other. The lodge also holds photos and memorabilia from Chickasaws who have served in the U.S. military, including historical information about the 45th Infantry Division of the Oklahoma National Guard, where Mike Mitchell retired as a major. In upcoming episodes of CNTV News, Brad and Quin continue their conversation with Mike as historians unearth more of the Chickasaw Nation's connection to WWII and the 45th Infantry.
