Chickasaw Nation News

This episode of CNTV News begins in conversation with Chickasaw illustrator Lauren John. Lauren's latest project is a children's book titled Loksi' Ishkin Homma' (Turtle's Red Eyes), created in collaboration with Chickasaw Press. This story is particularly special to Lauren, as it is narrated by her grandmother and fluent Chickasaw speaker Pauline Brown. "It's a family project in a way," Lauren says. "Even though she's no longer here to have her hands on it, it still feels nice knowing the stories that she told are things that I now get to tell and pass on." The annual Chickasaw Nation Butterfly Art Contest celebrates the talents of young artists ages 14-18. The winner of the 2025 contest is 18-year-old Chickasaw artist Kaya Johnson. Kaya's colorful piece features Chickasaw-inspired design and is the logo for this year's Dynamic Women of the Chickasaw Nation conference.

The two-day conference invites Chickasaw women to gather together in fellowship to hear speakers and panel discussions, as well as to honor the Dynamic Chickasaw Woman of the Year. Janie Simms Hipp is the 2025 honoree. Her career spans 40 years working in agriculture and food law, creating numerous programs to help the farming community, bringing food to those in need and serving as the first First American woman to be general counsel for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

To close the episode, Chickasaw women and girls ages 7-25 are invited to the Princess in Training event at the Chickasaw capitol in Tishomingo. Participants will discover what it takes to become a Chickasaw Princess, including eligibility requirements and lessons on traditional regalia, language and interview skills.
