Chickasaw Nation News

Brad Clonch and Quin Tran wish you a healthy start to your New Year, reporting from the Chickasaw Nation Wellness Center in Ada. The Wellness Center is over 25,000 square feet and equipped with fitness equipment needed to achieve any health goal. The trained staff also have the knowhow to teach a variety of group fitness classes, with 84 classes offered and counting. A standout at the Wellness Center is the only Prama Studio in the state of Oklahoma. A Prama Studio is a high-tech fitness studio that incorporates music, lights and pressure-sensitive flooring to make engaging workout classes. Derek Hamilton, the Wellness Center Regional Manager, encourages anyone who is curious about developing a healthier lifestyle to come and see the facility. Next up in this episode, a recent study found that the Chickasaw Nation's economic impact on the local economy is vast. Study author Kyle Dean, Ph.D. analyzed economic data throughout the state while referencing the boundaries of the Chickasaw Nation. Ultimately, Dean discovered that the Chickasaw Nation drives a significant portion of the economy, with a $3.7 billion-dollar impact on Oklahoma. Brad and Quin also celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Chickasaw Nation's Lighthorse Police Force. Reestablished in 2004, the Lighthorse Police Force works with local, state and federal agencies to help and protect citizens. That effort also includes hosting safety and community outreach programs, including a summer children’s police academy. To close out the episode, Brad and Quin share information regarding the history of the Lighthorse Police Force. "Protecting Our People: Chickasaw Law Enforcement in Indian Territory" by Michelle Cooke is a book published by the Chickasaw Press to examine the history and legacy of this storied police force.
