Chickasaw Nation News

Reporting from their home studios, Brad Clonch and Quin Tran cover important updates from the Chickasaw Nation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. First is a discussion of the Chickasaw Nation Obstetrics Department's new protocols for families expecting a baby at a Chickasaw healthcare facility. Pregnant patients and their one support person will receive a COVID-19 rapid test. The test results must be negative for the support person before allowing them into the facility and delivery room. Chickasaw healthcare personnel request that the support person minimizes trips to and from the hospital to reduce COVID-19 risk for staff and medical professionals. This supports the delivery of a healthy baby, as well as ensures the safety of everyone involved.

COVID-19 has also transformed emergency medicine in the Chickasaw Nation. Quinn interviews Dr. Crystalle Evans, Chief of the Emergency Department at the Chickasaw Nation Medical Center. "We realized early on that COVID was changing landscape of medicine, especially regarding transmission and having us rethink the way we do patient encounters," says Dr. Evans. The Emergency Department, in response to COVID-19, developed an ED triage parking lot process. Instead of the mildly ill or injured waiting in waiting rooms for their examination, they receive a screening and initial exam in their vehicle. Patients never get out of their cars before entering the ER for a final examination by a healthcare professional for their injury or illness. Dr. Evans and Quinn also discuss the rise of telemedicine during this conversation, as well as the longterm effect of COVID-19 on the medical field.

Next, Brad and Quin explore how artists are instructing others in the arts while social distancing. Quin speaks to Chickasaw artist and Chickasaw Nation Arts Academy instructor Risa Wilkins McKinney on how she's helping kids explore art while at home. At her studio in Edmond, she assembles porch art kits for kids. These kits come pre-packaged with paint, a pre-drawn canvas and spare canvases. After a kit is ordered, Risa drops it off on porches for kids and families to enjoy.

Brad then covers prestigious literary awards recently received by the Chickasaw Press. "Protecting Our People: Chickasaw Law Enforcement in Indian Territory" by Michelle Cooke received an Oklahoma Book Award for Design and "Chickasaw Adventures: The Complete Collection" received a Ben Franklin Gold Award for Excellence in Book Publishing. They offer their congratulations to the winners and highlight where you can get a copy.

They close out the episode with a reading of a story from "Chikasha Stories Volume One: Shared Spirit," which features a tale about Duck and Coyote.
