Chickasaw Nation News

In this episode of CNTV News, Brad Clonch and Quin Tran appear from Exhibit C in the Bricktown district of Oklahoma City. This 4,000-square-foot space showcases works by Chickasaw and other Native artists, with a gallery and gift shop. Exhibit C also serves as a tourism information center for Bricktown visitors who are interested in exploring Chickasaw Country. Not far from Bricktown, the Oklahoma City Philharmonic is practicing a musical number by modern Chickasaw composer Jerod Tate. The piece is the "Clans" movement from the larger theatrical work "Lowak Shoppala' (Fire and Light)." In addition to orchestral music, the performance features readings of poetry by Chickasaw author Linda Hogan, along with regalia designed by acclaimed Chickasaw textile artist Margaret Roach Wheeler. Jerod Tate's recorded works are available from Grammy® award-winning record label Azica Records, as well as Innova Records and Sono Luminus. Coming up soon in Sulphur is a beloved springtime festival, the Three Sisters Celebration. Held March 16-24 at the Chickasaw Cultural Center, the event celebrates the companion crops of corn, beans and squash and features horticulture tours, gardening lessons and traditional games. For more information, visit www.ChickasawCulturalCenter.com. In addition to art, Brad and Quin were able to browse numerous Chickasaw Press publications at Exhibit C, including C is for Chickasaw from the White Dog Press imprint. This picture book encourages alphabet learning and provides information on Chickasaw culture, language and history. Along with the picture book, a companion coloring book and app add to the fun and learning that kids can experience. For this and other publications, visit www.ChickasawPress.com.
