Chickasaw Nation News

In this episode of CNTV News, Brad Clonch and Quin Tran appear at the ARTesian Gallery & Studios in Sulphur. This facility provides space for Chickasaw artists to create art and showcase their masterpieces, with dozens of unique artworks on display. Hands-on classes taught by noted artists are also available and open to the public. One such teacher is Mary Ruth Barnes, whose bright watercolors celebrate nature and the stories handed down among the Chickasaws. She will be teaching classes this spring. To learn about signing up, visit www.Chickasaw.net or call (580) 622-8040. Keep Oklahoma Beautiful recently presented a Visionary Leadership award to the Chickasaw Nation ReUse Center as part of its Environmental Excellence Celebration. The ReUse Center has collected more than 211,000 pounds of materials, including clothing and household items, since it opened in 2010. Redistributing these goods has helped thousands of people, and the Center's recycling efforts have helped to reduce the flow of trash to landfills. In other news, the Chickasaw Cultural Center received a Communitas Award for its efforts to save monarch butterflies. The population of these butterflies has declined largely because of a dwindling supply of milkweed, so since 2015 the Chickasaw Nation has partnered with other Native American tribes to plant 50,000 milkweed plants throughout Oklahoma. There is a butterfly garden in the Chickasaw Cultural Center where you can learn more about the migration patterns and ecological importance of monarch butterflies.
