April 15, 2013 - Beading

Chickasaw Nation News

Tribal beading is a very important part of Chickasaw culture. Chickasaw elder, Glenda Galvan, passes the craft onto younger generations by teaching them her methods and sharing her passion. Her specialty is beading collars that are worn with traditional Chickasaw dresses. Dixie Brewer also discusses the sentimentality of giving a hand beaded collar to a loved one as a gift. Another Chickasaw who finds fulfillment in this art form is Lorie Robins. Every year she creates a collar that accompanies the Dynamic Woman of the Year award. She expresses the challenge and great honor she feels in this process.
