March 1, 2011 – Martial Arts Program

Chickasaw Nation News

For Matt Guzman, the martial arts aren't just about physical strength and discipline – but about the mental strength and patience gained through years of practice. That's why Guzman, a black belt who began studying at age 9, instructs youth at the Child Development Center. This program of the Youth & Family Services Division also incorporates Chickasaw culture into the lessons, by teaching the language as children learn the moves. Matt Clark, the martial arts coordinator knows that kids are sponges – and pairing martial arts with language acquisition only strengthens what they absorb. Martial arts classes are free to Chickasaw Nation citizens and employees – and are also offered for adults! Visit Chickasaw.net for more information.
