Prior to 2004, law enforcement on Chickasaw land had been federally funded through the Bureau of Indian Affairs; and while this was financially effective, it restricted the size of the force. So, the Chickasaw Nation established its own law enforcement division — the Lighthorse Police Department, with a much larger staff. The Nation is now able to patrol its entire 13-county jurisdiction.
