"Visual Voices: Contemporary Chickasaw Art" is a traveling exhibit committed to bringing the work of a diverse group of Chickasaw artists beyond the borders of Chickasaw Country. Ranging from traditional to abstract and pop culture-oriented, the artworks are like self-contained stories that express facets of Chickasaw identity. Joshua Hinson told his family history through depictions of his female ancestors, while Joanna Underwood Blackburn created a sculpture incorporating prayers submitted by 39 tribes across Oklahoma. The exhibit first opened at the Fred Jones Museum of Art in Norman, part of the University of Oklahoma. In a few months it will appear in Jackson, Miss., and later in Santa Fe, N.M.
