Chickasaw Nation News

In this episode of CNTV News, Brad Clonch and Quin Tran follow the fortunes of Metal Mayhem, the robotics team from the Chickasaw Nation STEM Academy that won the Oklahoma Regional Robotics Competition and proceeded to make an impressive showing at the world competition in Houston. The STEM program started in 2008 and is offered to Chickasaw youth and students in surrounding communities. Children from the Chickasaw Nation Head Start program participated in parades and activities to commemorate the Week of the Young Child, an annual nationwide celebration focusing on the importance of early learning. The WinStar Convention Center in Thackerville hosted the Dynamic Women of the Chickasaw Nation conference, a two-day event celebrating the accomplishments of Chickasaw women. Artist Brenda Kingery, who was recognized as the 2017 Dynamic Woman of the Year, acted as keynote speaker. "We need this to encourage each other and to empower each other as we go into the future, but I think it's wonderful for us to listen to others and their experiences," says Kingery. "This is storytelling." Another trip behind the scenes of the historical feature film Te Ata features a visit by Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby to the set. "Te Ata was a very special figure in Chickasaw history," Governor Anoatubby explains. "She was a wonderful woman, did a great thing for our people, and we needed to document and maintain this story." We also learn more about the settings of the film as they relate to the childhood and education of groundbreaking Chickasaw storyteller Te Ata Thompson Fisher.
