Chickasaw Nation News

The Chickasaw Nation-produced film "Te Ata" recently premiered at Ada's McSwain Theatre, and Brad Clonch and Quin Tran talk to moviegoers about their reaction to the impactful story, which follows the famed Chickasaw storyteller from 1898 to 1935. Her determination led her to a successful career performing on stages throughout the world. Actress Q'orianka Kilcher, who plays the title role, says she's very proud and happy as a young indigenous woman that this movie is being made; her father is of Quechua-Huachipaeri descent from Peru. Kilcher drew on her background in dancing and music to bring "Te Ata" to life on the big screen. The film was shot exclusively in Oklahoma and features historic landmarks like the Chickasaw White House. "Te Ata" will be released on DVD this November to coincide with Native American Heritage Month. Also in Ada, a new 15,000-square-foot Veterans Lodge and an Emergency Medical Services building were recently opened, and in Purcell, a brand-new Wellness Center and a remodeled Medical Clinic and office were unveiled.
