Chickasaw Nation News

In this episode of CNTV News, Brad Clonch and Quin Tran feature the Chickasaw Cultural Center in Sulphur. This facility, opened in 2010 and spanning 109 acres, provides visitors with interactive exhibits, cultural demonstrations and activities exploring aspects of Chickasaw culture. One of the largest annual events held here is the Three Sisters Celebration, marking the importance of corn, beans and squash as long-time staples of the Chickasaw people. The event, which features gardening workshops and plenty of games and activities for the whole family, takes place March 16-24. For more information, visit www.ChickasawCulturalCenter.com. Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt has nominated Lisa Johnson Billy for the position of Secretary of Native American Affairs. Billy has served as a Chickasaw legislator and an Oklahoma state representative. Her nomination was approved unanimously in committee and will now move toward confirmation. The Chickasaw Nation STEM Academy, which hosts multiple youth events throughout the year, will host its first "FemSTEM" workshop this year. The program is designed to introduce Native and non-Native middle school girls to STEM disciplines, building confidence and demonstrating the wide variety of rewarding careers available to them. For more information on youth programs, visit www.Chickasaw.net. In Tishomingo, Chickasaw youth showed off their basketball skills at a demonstration hosted by Murray State College. This event was part of the PiP (Players in Progress) program, a Chickasaw Youth Clubs initiative that teaches kids confidence, self-esteem and basketball skills. Participants prove their dexterity and teamwork at the demonstrations, which have been held in various venues including an Oklahoma City Thunder game. March is National Reading Month, a great time to read to your kids, so the program closes with a look at Little Loksi, a picture book now available from Chickasaw Press.
