With the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Brad Clonch and Quin Tran feature some of the talented athletes of the Chickasaw Nation. When she was seven years old, judo athlete Kayla Chappell began training in Moore with two-time Olympic athlete Patrick Burris. She now trains at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, with the goal of competing in the 2016 games. Another young athlete, 17-year-old Jussely Canada, practices mixed marital arts and trains in Ada. The intense sport blends elements of judo, jujitsu, wrestling and boxing.
College students, to mark your calendars – the Chickasaw Nation’s Higher Education spring deadline for scholarships and grants is February 1. For more information, visit Chickasaw.net.
Chickasaw storyteller Glenda Galvan has released another volume in her award-winning children’s book series, “Chikasha Stories,” which also includes beautiful illustrations by Chickasaw artist Jeannie Barbour. The book series is unique in that it’s written in English but is also translated into Chickasaw. The Moonbeam Book Awards honored “Chikasha Stories, Volume Two: Shared Voices” with the Bronze in the Multicultural Picture Book category.
